A National Seafood survey, using DNA evidence revealed;

Fewer than 77% of fish samples taken were correctly labelled.

  • What we are eating was only what we ordered on 64% of occasions. Up to a quarter of all fish sold to us in Australia is deceptively labelled as the wrong species. 1 out of 4 imported farmed products tested were rejected by AQIS due to traces of antibiotics. Premium fish being substituted with other species. (The survey revealed that due to the demand for premium quality barramundi that in some cases it is being substituted with the much cheaper Nile Perch. Can you tell the difference?)
  • Bargain Fish Sales, fish which is produced in Asian aquaculture farms, sold along side premium quality Australian fish without being identified or labelled.
  • Now, there are fines imposed of up to $275,000 for misleading conduct of this kind. Be aware and responsible, ask about what you are buying and selling.
  • * Research conducted and statics provided by Food Standards Australia & New Zealand (FSANZ), in conjunction with the state health agencies in 2004. DNA markers were used to check fish authenticity and the research was based on 200 raw & cooked samples from food outlets, restaurants, cafes, seafood shops and wholesale locations.

  • FACT

    Although there are caged pellet fed fish from several Barramundi farms throughout Australia and cheaper imports from other countries. Nothing is more natural, safer or as appealing to customers as “Real Australian Wild Caught Barramundi”, which comes from their own natural habitat from the clean green pristine waters, off the Northern Territory coast.
